Lest We Forget

Greetings all on this very special day.  As always this day holds many memories and emotions for most people I know so I thought it was a good chance to say thank you to all that have served and are serving in the armed forces at the moment.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Lest We Forget

Dear Santa....

With Christmas well and truly here I thought I might treat myself to a couple of gifts from Santa.

Plus with the Aussie dollar being so strong with the US dollar I jumped online and picked up these little numbers, and bonus they were on sale too.

From Pinup Couture

From Bettie Page Clothing

So at least my summer wardrobe will be sorted this January. Now does this mean I get to buy shoes for my birthday??? Or am I just dreaming

Whats a girl to wear?????

Now Melbourne doesn't play fair when it comes to the weather. For instance the weather in the last week has ranged from 32 to 16 degrees C, then add in humidity, rain, hail, bright sun and wind it can make choosing very hard. Even in these days where I'm stuck wearing a uniform to work most days the options for long and short sleeved shirts can be tricky with the tempt rising or dropping dramatically during the day.

So I've been thinking about the classic 1950's day dress. With the simple shirt dress you can warm it up with a cardi/shrug or shawl or keep it cool with a wide brimmed sun hat. Whats even better as this style can be found in many modern shops such as portmans, sussans and even target. I can tell you know ladies there will be a lot of these dresses this summer for me.

Where's my pinny

With the christmas season in sight I thought I just might hunt through some old images and look what I found. This of course makes me wonder why more people don't wear pinnies/aprons. Sure there is the 'kiss the chef' and 'fake boobs' aprons that get dragged out at most BBQ's but where is the lost art of the beautiful apron?

So I'm on a mission to find/make and promote cute designs. Off the the flea market for me.

Just ducking out.....

Now I know I should be working, but when you have a few vintage stores within walking distance and you have a lunch break….yep that’ right you just have to go and check it out.

Part of me thinks just how much can I a) fit in my luggage and b) is it worth planning another trip to buy up and then resell my great finds that I can’t fit.

I picked up a very similar dress like this at the Salvo’s for ….wait for it….$10. What more could you want? A great retro dress, cheap and in great condition, hence why I just had to have it. This reminds me of what my buddy AK always says “you never know what gems you’ll find unless you hunt through the racks”. And this time it paid off, now to add a few petticoats to this and the right shoes and off we go!

Why do I shop at Op-shops? Firstly it reminds us that one persons trash is another’s treasure, and secondly when you shop there you are actually helping the non-for profit that owns it. For instance by buying dresses I adore I can help the RSPCS, Salvation Army, Oxfam, St Vinnies and various other oraginisations. Each dollar I give them and not a mass produced big chain can help them do what they do best, help others in a worse situation than me. Sure I do shop in vintage stores and help the independent owners to make a living but I just think it is good to help everyone. So next time your walking past an op-shop have a look in you will never know what you can find.

My One and Only

On another afternoon filled with tea and cake I managed to watch My One and Only starring Renee Zellweger. Its a great little story and so easy to get lost in the fashion. Oh the fashion! Every outfit is stunning and yes I did have a bit of wardrobe envy.

So whats the story....
The beautiful but mercurial Ann Devereaux (Renée Zellweger) has just left her philandering husband Dan Devereaux (Kevin Bacon), a society bandleader, and taken to the road with her teenage sons, George (Logan Lerman) and Robbie (Mark Rendall), in search of a wealthy replacement mate. Although it's 1953, Ann is certain that her girlish charms will serve her as well as they did two decades earlier. But time has marched on since Ann's courting days, and it seems that the losers and playboys outnumber the eligible and willing bachelors. Ann never gives up hope, but a series of new schools for the boys, ever more humble lodgings and romantic misadventures start to take the gloss off their trip. Yet Ann is indefatigable, her pride matched by the flighty enthusiasm of her older son Robbie, a flamboyant boy who believes he is meant for a life on the stage, and the cynical wit of George, an observant aspiring writer. As the miles roll by, their journey veers from eccentric, to hair rising, to poignant, to comic. From her impulsive choices to the downright bizarre characters they meet on the road, Ann steers her sons on a narrow highway between excitement and panic. But ultimately, George discovers the determination, dignity and love underneath his mothers narcissistic exterior. And Ann makes a different future for herself and her sons than any of them had imagined.

Planning for Wintersun

Ok so its no where near june but with all the air fare specials on my mind has turned to one of my fav times of year WinterSun!!!!!! It doesn't hurt that the Victorian hot rod show is on next weekend. http://www.hotrod.com.au/ Yes I know I just go to drool over the cars but they are SO BEAUTIFUL!

Now growing up on the Gold Coast this was one of the few times when I could indulge myself in the cars, fashion, makeup and music of the 40's 50's and 60's.

And it did make me a feel a little bit more normal being surrounded by all the colour and passion about the time. Sure I may have been the young one who could have been mistaken for being dragged by her father (ok so the first year that was true but once there i was addicted).

So I'm looking at flights and lodgings; plus the most important things WHAT AM I GOING TO WEAR????? Time to start ordering from the US and getting in front of that sewing machine. Brace yourself GC your little rockabilly is on her way back!

Plus it doesn't hurt that there will be a burlesque night as well. Oh well I guess I'll just have to force myself to go ;)

so if your interested....

too hot to dress up

In this hot weather which is QLD I have been reminded why its so hard to buy clothing. Its too hot to try anything on.

However there are times when you just have to. So far in my travels I have found the stunning little hats, some super cute earrings, cool shoes and a thousand other things I wish I could bring home with me. But sadly i had to settle for just playing dress ups.

So after a few iced coffees my friend Ez and I discovered a great little store called That Shop in Burleigh Heads. So yes this is not the best photo taken of me but hey in this heat you can't have everything ;)

So i have to say congrats to all you stunning GC Rockabilly gals in this heat and still looking this fabulous. This amazing lady was also found at burliegh heads. Your stunning gal! If this is you please let me know.

all wrapped up

Well the presents have all been opened, the turkey has been eaten and now its time to play with the presents. I will be posting some stunning images of vintage finds I was given by family. (photos to come. I hope this post finds you all full from food and surrounded by your loved ones.

I ended spending a good part of my Christmas morning baking cupcakes for the family get together then of course most of the afternoon eating them. Its funny how no matter your age when a family gets together how we all fall back into our roles like children.

So now to go off and play with everything before we get to tired.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight.

In this heat

In this heat I am struggling with my love of stockings. I have invested in some stunning pairs from various providers but with the heat wave in Melbourne its proving a little harder to wear everyday.

So many of you may ask why since the invention of pantyhose or tights would anyone want to wear stockings unless you are trying to rev up the engine of your partner.

Well for me personally they make me walk taller, smile more and generally feel spectacular. There is just something special about walking around knowing that under your dress/skirt is the this silken pleasure is there, only for you and for those you wish to share it with.

I do firmly believe that lingerie is the foundation of you day, so with the right beginnings anything is possible.

I can only advise that ladies its time to hit the shops and grad a pair of stocking. Stay ups or true stockings and walk tall in your beauty.

You never know

Some days you find little gems in the places you least expect it.

Not so long ago Mr and I made our way to the other side of the city to visit Spotswood. I adore this little part of the world. Spotswood, Seddon, Yarra Ville they all have the vibe that time sort of stopped in about 1954 and the rest of Melbourne forget to say anything. However you do get a sense that the beatniks are about to make their way out of the workmans cottages at any moment and the next big thing will begin. However I digress.
Mr and I were heading to indulge our inner geek at the Scienceworks Star Wars exhibition. Must say its worth the drive to see these great pieces plus there is science for all you parents who think the kiddies should learn something.
Anyhoo, the other bonus is you get entry into scieneworks museum and one section is all about the home. That was when I happen to stumble across the greatest collection of 1950's kitchen wear and beauty items.

So the plan is to distract the guards while I break in and get all the kitchen goodness I can. It makes you wonder what your grandmother and mother did with all these items.

I am such a sucker for cute packaging

I'd love to have this aftershave bottle collection.

Purple Princess

Well somedays you need to do something a little different. Hence I decided that to pin curls would be my challange. Overall it worked well, nice curls considering my hair never usually stays curled once I've undone them.

So in the mood of fun and purple inspired smiles I went for this little combo.

Mellissa Q Headband

Legs Avenue Stockings

Shoes - Candy
