Rockabilly Goth

So in the spirit of MsKitty being down I decided to rockabilly/goth it up, and I thought I'd share with you all. It was an easy and fun dress up day just added black sheer top to my favorite red skirt, as well as black and red rose hair clips. Of course a few healthy dose of deep red lipstick.

Roller Derby Dolls

I've like roller derby for awhile. For me it was a great mix of female power, skates, attitude, rockabilly and a bit of naughty fun. Then with the release of Whip It and finding out one of my ex coworkers (Raspberry Bullet) was in the QLD league it got me thinking about it all again. The ladies that went before and had the crowd standing on its feet cheering while they knocked the other team to their knees.

If your not sure what I'm going on about here is a bit of information I've managed to piece together from various sources.

The term Roller Derby goes back as far as 1922 when it was used to describe flat track roller skating races. However Derby is mostly known as a 19/50/60/70's sport where is started to have more and more theatrical elements.

Contemporary Derby is now international with over 500 women's leagues in 16 countries. And most are non-profit for the love of it teams. For me, I adore the rockabilly/pyschobilly aspect of the dress. Plus its about being strong and confident in your own skin, a lesson we can all learn from.

For me its not only about the sport, its about embracing yourself. Simply as you are, or how you want to be. The doco about the QLD team was also on the ABC not so long ago which has only amped up my interest. Thankfully there is a rather large derby league in melbourne so in the not to distant future I'll be heading to a match. So hold onto your skates for the next installment.

Makes me smile

I adore all types of fashion with my weakness for vintage, 1950's, rockabilly, goth, victorian and steampunk. Which is why the poster made me smile, at first I thought "no way" but then I thought about my fashion progression and thought "maybe?". Anyway this was good for a laugh, maybe next I'll try psychobilly and see what thats like as it rolls most of my passions into one.

That Shop

A big shout out to SJ and the team at That Shop in Burleigh Heads; another weakness of mine when it comes to shopping on the Gold Coast. Needless to say it is a must go to place for me when I’m up especially as every time I go there they have more and more for me to play with.

In my younger days I went there for my Japanese anime inspired items such as Hello Kitty, then my Emily the strange and other various gothic items, then my rockabilly and now my pinup. One of the coolest things about this store is that it has no pretention at all. It is what it is, That Shop.
It also amazes me just how in tune with my growing taste this store is. So I do suggest if your up for wintersun go check them out, but be careful your wallet might feel a little lighter afterwards.

St Kilda art, food, writing what more can a gal ask for.

Melbourne can be the most amazing blend of fashion/styles/thoughts and people in general. This week I made my to one of my favorite streets, Acland in St Kilda. I have always had a soft spot for St Kilda/Elwood/Balaclava as they were always this great blend of artist/boho/hobo/trendy and yet they all seemed to mix without any problem. So this week with pen and paper in hand I headed to my fav street for some writing, photos and of course yummy food.

So with my little rockabilly dress it was time to wander and work up and appetite. It can be a bit weird to have chain store next to a independent trader next to a restaurant, yet it seems to be the best way you can describe Acland with its mix of styles both in trader and customer.
What did I write you may ask? Yes a little for this blog but a lot more for me. That was until an author friend of mine turned up with yet another crisis in their latest project. It was funny to have a discussion about their ever growing book (currently in edit #3) when my current writing style is this sharp short blog. Needless to say the fact that they turned up with laptop in hand trying to edit while discussing it made me laugh more than a little. Thankfully there came a break and a dinner, so for a moment the editing had to stop.
Maybe next time I won’t answer my phone when I’m out.
Who am I kidding of course I will ;)

Art is in the air

You can find some amazing art if you keep your eyes open. These were a couple of posters I found in the dressing room of a little rockabilly store. I just adore the color and graphics in these. Simple yet powerful.

Then I came across these movie shots on the window of a cafe. They are just so great, and i'm not even sure why. Needless to say I just had to snap a couple.
