Happy Hottest 100 Day!!!!

Firstly CONGRATS to Gotye with Somebody that I used to know taking out the top stop in todays Hottest 100.

OK so many people around this country of mine are walking around wearing aussie flags, drinking and BBQing all in the name of Australia day. Well for me personally (and a bunch of others) today is the day where we celebrate the music of the last 12 months with Triple J's Hottest 100. Sure I may have spent a large portion of it at work but yep we had the radio tuned to Triple J and trying to guess which bands got in.

People often think technology is a bad thing but thanks to smart phones, internet music streaming and the net in general I have had the hottest 100 music playing all day!!!!!! People are listening all around the work, even my mates in Japan are!!!!

I've spoken about this day before but just in case you still don't know what I'm talking about here is a little history

"triple j's hottest 100 is one of the largest public music polls in the world with millions of individual votes counted since it's inception in 1989. Originally listeners were asked to compile a list of their favourite songs of all time and mail them to triple j. Diligent triple j staffers then tallied these votes by hand! Today things have been greatly simplified behind the scenes, with all voting cast using either SMS or online.

Joy Division topped the first hottest 100 with the classic "Love Will Tear Us Apart". The seminal British band stayed on top for successive years until a band called Nirvana released a little tune by the name of "Smells like Teen Spirit" in '91. The focus of the Hottest 100 changed after these early years limiting the voting selection to songs released in the previous 12 months. Since the change, Australian artists have featured prominently with Spiderbait, The Whitlams, Powderfinger ,Alex Lloyd and Jet all having taken the coveted number one position. " taken from Triple J Homepage www.abc.net.au/triplej

Normally for my friends (online and in person) and I its a day of games like seeing who can guess the most correct entries, who gets number 1; bbq's, drinks and general fun sadly like I said before I was at work. However I did manage to get home for a cocktail and get to hear the top 10 with friends.

So how did I go you may ask in my guess well I didn't get a complete top 10 but some of my fave songs made it onto the list.

ARIA Awards 2011

I just wanted to say a big congratulations to one of my favourite Australia artists Gotye aka Wally De Baker. I was so pleased to see that he achieved what some might say is 'the holy grail of ARIA results" taking out top spot on both the singles and album chart as Making Mirrors debuts at #1.

With Making Mirrors already certified Gold sales status, it is also the first album to sell more than 35,000 copies in a week this year. The Melbourne singer/songwriter continues to grow in stature with each week, his single “Somebody That You Used To Know” featuring Kimbra having now achieved three consecutive weeks at number one.

So in honor of this wonderful achievement I thought I would share Gotye and Kimbra's performance at the ARIA awards on sunday night. Sit back, raise a glass to great aussie artists and drink a toast to the truly amazing talent we have here in Melbourne.

Thank Goodness for Aussie Music

A big smile is on my face at the moment thanks to Australian artist Wally De Backer or as he is more commonly known these days by his stage name Gotye. I'm not sure exactly when I first discovered his music, I think it was around 2006 when I first got my hands on this album "Like Drawing Blood". I admit I had the CD on repeat so much I actually wore it out and had to invest in a second and then the digital download.

So its no surprise that when I was given a copy of his latest work "Making Mirrors" I was over the moon. For me his music is amazing as it reaches across so many different genres and there is a track for almost every mood. A big thanks also goes to the Australian radio station Triple J who first introduced me to this wonderful artist and have been playing the album for me. I have put up a clip from the album its called "Somebody That I Used To Know" and features another great artist Kimbra, who I am also getting hooked on. There is just something about this song that makes me want to turn it up load and belt out the lyrics. So please have a listen.

I would also like to invite you all, if you like the sound of Gotye's work, to go out and buy the CD or jump online at Itunes and get the album. All artists should be supported and I urge to support our local talent as they make amazing music and should be supported to make more. If you do jump on itunes grab the deluxe version as it has a digital booklet and video clips including the making of the album.

So a big virtual hug to one of my favorite Australian artist Wally De Backer, I love your music and I look forward to many years of great work from you.
