Fat Freddy's Drop Live at the Forum Melbourne

Sorry dear readers for the long radio silence. However I am glad to report I'm back!

Friday night finally came. Yep thats right the long awaited FAT FREDDY'S DROP concert. I've been counting down for months for this and finally at 8pm on friday the 26th the doors of the Forum Theater opened for all us fans.

With a great opening act to really get us in the mood it was no surprise it was a great night. It was one of those weird but cool nights. I saw staff member and their mates which was funny when I was introduced as "this is my boss", a funny statement to me when I'm out of uniform. I knew they were going, in fact this staff member was the one who actually let me know about the concert. So a big shout out to Hobbs for the heads up and what turned out to be my fav concert of the year.

However what was a complete surprise was seeing an old mate who I haven't seen in months. It was one of those see you across a crowded room, steal glances and see if its the right person. Then after the first act he made his way over and it was catch up time. It was fantastic to share the music and whats been going on in our lives over the last 6 months.

So my overall review. FANTASTIC NIGHT! cool music, surprise friends catch up, awesome location and finally got to see a band I love LIVE! Which makes me want to remind you all to take the chance and get out there in this big wide world. Even if you have to go alone you never know who'll you meet once your out there.

Fat Freddy's at the Forum

Well its that time of year again. Bands on tour, festivals, daylight savings and a huge list of reasons why its time to embrace the spring sun and hit the town. Which all starts with my attendance of a concert at the Forum for Fat Freddy's Drop. This NZ band is making a trip across the water to bring their amazing tunes our way.

So in a few weeks we will all be there and yes there will be photos! So stay tuned!

A little bit of cool

I have a very odd tradition when it comes to friends and music…I ask all of my friends to give me either one song or one artist that I don’t know to listen to. This way I get to hear their musical taste and I get to find new music that I may never of listened to without their help. My most recent gift was that of Fat Freddy's Drop; a seven-piece band from Wellington, New Zealand, whose musical style has been characterised as any combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno. Originally a jam band formed in the late 1990s by musicians from other bands in Wellington, Fat Freddy’s Drop gradually became its members' sole focus. Band members continued playing with their other respective groups—The Black Seeds, TrinityRoots, Bongmaster, and others—for much of their 11-year career. Fat Freddy’s Drop are known for their improvised live performances; songs on their studio albums are versions refined over years of playing them live in New Zealand, and on tour abroad.

The group gained international recognition in 2003 after their single "Midnight Marauders" was re-distributed by record labels and DJs in Germany. The group has toured Europe nearly every year since then. The first studio album by Fat Freddy’s Drop, Based on a True Story which has just been uploaded into my ipod, was the first independently-distributed album to reach first place in New Zealand record sales directly after release in 2005, and is the highest-selling album by a national artist in the country's history. Based on a True Story won Best Album at the New Zealand Music Awards the same year, and remained on the top 40 New Zealand sales chart for over two years, establishing them as one of the most successful contemporary bands in the island nation.

You can also find their music and clips on youtube if you fancy having a listen, I recommend “What the world without soul” and “wandering eye”. So now I have 3 of their album’s and are very impressed by the music each has offered me; as each is a little different than the one that precedes it.

Happy listening.
